Happiness Formula
Here's a happiness formula presented by Smt. Jaya Row (Vedanta Vision) that is worth understanding and investigating.
Happiness = Fulfilled Desires / Desires Harbored or H = FD / DH.
Let's apply some numbers to this formula and explain the findings.
Case 1: FD = 0 and DH = 1,2,3...N where N is a non-zero positive number
Happiness is 0 when FD=0. In most circumstances, a person would not want to have ZERO happiness. As a result, one will try to fulfill as many desires as possible and accumulate new ones at the same time (where DH is a positive number). Note that if FD is increased, DH is decreased. If one fulfils a desire, then one has reduced the number of desires harbored. As a result, H increases if no new desire is harbored, hence experiencing the moment of being happier. Here's a common example that one experiences everyday. "I feel great and happy. I got promoted to Senior Manager after all the hard work; I bought a new car; I upgraded to a bigger LCD TV; and the list goes on." But, what happens if someone reduces the number of desires harbored to 0? That leads to Case 2.
Case 2: FD = 0,1,2,...N where N is a positive number and DH = 0
Any number divided by 0 is INFINITE. For this case, Happiness = INFINITE when desires harbored becomes 0. Spiritual renunciation is one way of lowering DH down to 0. It is definitely worthwhile for a person to find out how to achieve INFINITE HAPPINESS. Some examples are; the enlightened state of reaching Nirvana, full devotional service to a Godhead figure or bhakti yoga. Bhakti Yoga is a concept that is present in all religions that teaches the concept of God. Among the commons are Hinduism, Judaism, Christianity, Islam and Baha'i.
Case 3: FD and DH = 1,2,3...N
The value of happiness fluctuates, as long as DH is non-zero. So, a random happiness number is created at different point of time. This explains why most people feel high and low through out their lifetime.
For simplicity let's assume Happiness is something that makes someone be at the peaceful, loving and satisfying state. In my humble opinion, words are sometimes difficult to express the state or nature of the heart and mind. It is something that has to be experienced.
